Day Two: Second post

Computer nowadays are what I like to think, necessary to the learning environment. When I was in elementary school and middle school, we had to carry backpacks full of heavy textbooks. It hurt my back, because I was not the strongest kid. With technology, we have the ability to have our textbooks on our computer now which makes transportation a little easier. Growing up I began to use computers more often. Most of my classes in college have tons of students taking notes on their laptops, or Ipads We are always using computers for research online, instead of sitting in the library going from book to book just to find one piece of information. It is easier, that is why we do it! When I am in the classroom I will need to have a computer to email my students or their parents, use technology to check and see they aren’t cheating or plagiarizing and to put in grades. Technology is only advancing from here, we as students have a responsibility to stay on top of it and make sure we know how to keep up to date with everything so by the time we get out of school we can use the it.

Recently the roles have changed for digital natives and immigrants. Before this advancement in technology the teachers would have been the digital natives and the immigrants would have been the students but now its the other way around. I agree with the labels. It was important for this change. In many of my classes now a lot of the teachers cannot figure out how to use the projection system or the speakers and the students are the ones who come help the teachers and show them how to work it. This surprisingly happens quite often. Most of the class time is wasted when the teacher cannot figure out how to use the piece of technology. I think that as teachers we should be able to keep up with the advancing so there is not time to waste in class. I will keep up to date with technology and learn how to use whatever I am going to use for class that day, the weekend before so this does not happens. It ruins the learning experience and makes the students judge your teaching ability.

My personal learning network involves social media like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Pintrest. You would be surprised by how much you learn on them. With Facebook people share important news articles all the time, that is how I stay involved with all that is going on in today’s society. Even on twitter, when you go to the trending page you can find out the happenings  of today just by scrolling through what everyone is saying. I use twitter as my newspaper. In the mornings I wake up, get my coffee and breakfast and sit down at the table and read the Twitteruniverse. In this class though, my personal learning network will add more educational techniques and the community in which it involves. I already present myself online in an appropriate manner. A lot of my family is friends with me on Facebook, or follow me on Twiiter or Instagram. It would not be a good idea to post a picture of me drinking or going outside of my standards to be judge by my people. I am 21 years old now, trying to develop a career. I don’t need my future employers to look back and see a picture that is not professional. Anything you put on the internet is permanent there is no way you can take it down and I understand that.

  1. One major thing I didn’t even think about was the change in textbooks for the younger generation still in school who need to carry books to class everyday. With the ability to access online textbooks and information on tablets and laptops it sure would make a huge change for kids who need to bring books and learning materials to class every day.

I also think its very interesting how you mentioned that the teachers were previously the digital natives. It was briefly mentioned in the reading, however when most people think digital natives now we think of our selves and the rest of our generation.

  2. I think it’s really interesting that you consider Facebook and Twitter and other social media sites part of your PLN. I never viewed those as educational tools before, but I definitely see where they could be. It would be interesting if you explored this in your future posts, I would love to hear more about your perspective.

  3. Your comment on old backpacks made me laugh. I remember sitting on the very edge of my seat on the bus because of how large my backpack was! However, my after school program has made me realize that K-12 still hasn’t changed much. Their backpacks are HUGE! An I believe they are only so large because they’re bringing every book home PLUS all of their electronics. One students packs her laptop, iPad, cell phone, and books every day. Yikes… Although my students attend a fundamental school, I can’t imagine it would be very different for other students.
